We were contacted by a wonderful grandmother in Brooklyn. She cared for her adult son who was a random victim of a crime many years ago. We were hired to make their rental apartment wheelchair accessible so that he can be more independent. The State of New York Office of Victim Services funded this project. This department helps crime victims in various ways including needed home alterations. We took on most of the project as a pro-bono effort as the state has limited funds for professional services.
The wheelchair accessible requirements demanded an enlarged bathroom and kitchen which opened up the common spaces in general. Cabinets, finishes, and millwork met the State’s budget concerns while achieving a wonderful “new” home for the family.
