Vanilla from Madagascar was one of the main imports of Lynn’s parent’s import/export business. We worked with local colleagues in Madagascar to design a community center for the people who work in the fields and in the fair trade processing center near the town of Sambava. This community center would assist in fair trade’s main goal: creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged workers.
Our design for this community center refers both visually and substantially to local vernacular construction. Local labor and materials are specified. The flexible and simple design will encourage the vanilla workers themselves to easily define the many possible ways the building can be used to strengthen their community.
